TÜBİTAK MAM Materials Institute Director Prof. Dr. Metin Usta reminded AA correspondent that Imece, Turkey’s first domestic and national high-resolution earth observation satellite, will be launched into space in 2022.

Stating that space-qualified solar panels are the biggest energy source of satellites, Usta noted that as an institute, they design, manufacture and test space-qualified solar panels at the Photovoltaic Technologies Center.

Pointing out that the panel they produced will stay on the national earth and observation satellite İmece for 5 years, Usta continued as follows:

“Space is an environment exposed to enormous radiation. There are very high temperature differences between day and night. It has to pass all tests against these temperature differences. Our panels have passed these tests and will gain a history for 5 years after being attached to the satellite. It is the first in Turkey and Only one solar panel will be qualified for space. Together with our infrastructure and qualified personnel, we have the ability to produce space-qualified solar panels for all kinds of satellites, and we are open to cooperation with all stakeholders in this regard.”

Usta stated that they can cost half the price of a space-qualified solar panel compared to the ones bought abroad, and stated that 5 panels will be used in İmece, and one of them will be the panel they produce.

Project coordinator Alper Seçgin stated that space-qualified solar panels are electrical power providers that can operate in challenging conditions in space and can meet the power needs of satellites by feeding from the sun’s rays. newsHe said it has been used in a wide variety of deep space missions, including fusion satellites.

Stating that the Space Qualified Solar Panel Development Project was initiated at TÜBİTAK MAM Materials Institute in 2015 in order to meet the needs of domestic satellites, Seçgin noted that a design, production and test infrastructure at international standards was established within the scope of the project.

Seçgin explained that the space-qualified solar panel, which will be used in domestic satellites, was developed with the knowledge and experience gained in the past period, “It has successfully completed ground level verification, qualification and functionality tests in accordance with international standards.” he said.

Emphasizing that it is the first panel designed and produced in Turkey within the scope of domestic and national possibilities, Seçgin continued his words as follows:

The space-qualified solar panel, which was produced for the first time with domestic and national facilities, provides 100 watts of power generation in challenging space conditions. In addition, with the knowledge and production infrastructure gained, solar panel design and production that can meet the power needs of satellites with high power requirements can be provided.”

Mentioning that the space-qualified solar panels used in previously developed domestic satellites were procured from abroad, Seçgin said, “With this project, it is aimed to reduce our country’s dependence on imports, to prevent trade restrictions applied to imported products in particular for military and intelligence applications, and to increase the share of production and export in the relevant field.” used the phrases.
